by: Stacy Everson, RN, BSN and Katheryn Pedgrift, MA An Array of Colors is a 40-45-lesson series designed to teach people with developmental disabilities
how to create meaningful and safe relationships while having knowledge of abuse and coercion. The lessons are divided
into 6 separate books so that social skills are taught in the context of relationships. Every book includes a user
friendly teacher’s guide, color pictures in hard copy or DVD format, and variety of student activities and role-plays.

The creators of the "Array of Colors" curriculum piloted the entire curricula in 2002-2004. The pilot classes took place in San Diego at various work training programs and transition school settings. The students were referred to Seeds Educational Services based on the presence of a variety of inappropriate/unsafe behaviors including engaging with strangers in the community and displaying excessive physical intimacy with staff and other acquiantances.
All class participants were adults (young adults to senior citizens) with mental retardation ranging from borderline to severe. All participants were assessed for their social-sexual knowledge befor classes began and again after participating in classes. Results indicated that in the majority of cases, participants express significantly more knowledge of social-sexual behavior after classes than they do before classes. Based on the results of these pilot studies, Seeds Educational Services has updated and revised their cirriculum in a fashion they believe will nehance the future learning of class participants' even further. We are currently testing the second edition and anticipate further success with the students we serve. |

FLASH CARDS Concept Cards General Information Seeds Education Concept Cards were developed for individuals with developmental disabilities in learning crucial concepts that coincide with The Array of Colors curriculum. The cards may be used independently or in addition to the curriculum. As the Concept Cards were developed, we utilized several pools of talent and featured work from some of our artistic students who have developmental disabilities. Our graphic artists created these simplified drawings with the knowledge that the cards are made to facilitate learning in individuals with all levels of intellectual functioning. We have found that simple drawings are more useful than detailed depictions because students tend to focus on extraneous detail, instead of the full picture. A portion of the proceeds from these cards go to our student artists to encourage and help fund their artistic talents. |
