Social Skills Training at SEEDS
Individual Consulting
Individual consulting is provided privately or in small group sessions. These consultations address immediate individual concerns that cannot be appropriately handled in a classroom environment and may require specialized training. Consultations are offered at the SEEDS office in Old Town or at the individual's work site or home.
Behavioral Consulting Success Story
As the stranger exposed himself to her in the elevator, Tawnya Ormsbee yelled "NO!" and rushed off the elevator to call the police. Tawnya stated, “I never knew I could say ‘NO!’ when someone behaved badly before I came to SEEDS." SEEDS' individual consulting service is an effective means of teaching people with developmental disabilities sexual abuse prevention techniques.
Stacy Everson, had this to say about Ormsbee's encounter:
Before Tawnya started attending SEEDS, she would let a stranger do whatever he wanted without saying a thing. After this incident, she told me that for the first time, she did not feel bad for the way she reacted. This is because she has learned how to be assertive and recognize inappropriate behavior. SEEDS provides individual or small group consulting services that students attend when they need to discuss pertinent issues about sexuality. During these sessions, SEEDS incorporate's the lessons into every aspect of the individuals life. For example, knowing the areas and activities that Tawnya was involved in, SEEDS tailored the material and utilized examples that she could relate to.

Classes
SEEDS Educational Services offers many classes throughout San Diego County. Classes are offered during the day and in the evening to adults with developmental disabilities. These classes are taught in small-to-large group settings and address socialization, boundaries, and abuse awareness and prevention. Classes and activities are designed to support people with developmental disabilities and teach them how to relate effectively with others in their community. SEEDS instructors tailor the classes to meet the specific needs of each group. For many students, the classes are an introduction to social norms. The classes and activities provide a safe environment for students to learn, ask questions and practice new skills. Socialization opportunities (picnics, parties) are offered five times a year to augment skills learned in class and offer a safe environment for students to practice socializing. Please contact the SEEDS office for a complete schedule and information regarding classes near you.
Workshops and lectures are available to community organizations that are interested in learning more about people with disabilities. The goals are to facilitate community integration, foster support and teach effective strategies in dealing with the concerns of people with disabilities when in public.
